I've just completed a whirlwind traveling schedule from London to New York finalizing my spring fashion collection. Yes- I said spring. I know, we've barely nestled into our winter wardrobe fashions and yet department stores are anxious to put out their spring trends. What can we learn from this early planning? We can learn that many of the styles from this fall/winter will remain strong in 2010.

So what's in style in 2010? The 1940's will still remain an influence in the early part of spring. We'll see fitted, structured suits and a definite menswear influence continueing into the early part of the new year. Make sure you pick up a hot boyfriend jacket!

We'll also see the Greek Goddess style consistant in this year as well so don't throw out your draped tops and gladiator shoes. Another trend I absolutely love is the Global influence and it will transition slightly into an Exotic flair with rich colors and an island influence for summer 2010.

So what can we gain with this knowledge? Well, it's safe to wear your fitted suits, harem pants, draping tops and rich, bold colors right through winter if the fabric is lightweight. They will be right on trend! If you haven't purchased gladiator sandals, maxi dresses and beaded tunics- run, don't walk to the sales rack and stock up for spring 2010!

Leggings, a global phenomenon!

I just returned from London with a new-found love for leggings. Sure, I can be easily pursuaded and have been know to give into peer pressure a time or two but this trip caused me to fall in love with the leggings trend.

The women of London are incredibly fashionable, wearing the trends so well. They embrace the archetectural designs of the top designers with ease and typically leave the basics for others while they embrace the latest fads.

The leggings were everywhere and on everyone! From 16 to 60, the trend was unescapable! Now, as a fashion designer myself, I've been working and reworking this trend for two years, searching for the perfect fabric with the right amount of coverage for me to feel good in this trend.

So now I challenge everyone to give the trend a try. At first, you might feel a little exposed, but by the end of the day you'll be searching for more leggings in various colors and patterns.

The chill of winter may still be in the air, but it’s not too early to take a look ahead at what will be the hot new fashions for spring. Top designers at this year’s runway shows unveiled all-American trends that can transform wallflowers into fashionistas as quickly as you can say “closet makeover.” From striped nautical styles and preppy plaids to the subdued hues of the desert, I’ll show you how adding a few key pieces to your wardrobe can help keep it up-to-date.

As the creator of the Kim Parrish Collection found on HSN (Home Shopping Network & HSN.com), I’m constantly searching for those new must-have items which can easily update our existing wardrobes. After all, many of us already have a closet full of “everything” and still “nothing” to wear! So how do we take what’s become boring and make it brilliant without breaking the bank? We need to recycle our basics and pair them up with some of the season’s hottest trends.

A popular trend for spring 2009 is the “Nautical” motif. It’s a revival of clean classics, patriotic stripes, rope details, and brass accents which conjure up images of leisurely vacations at quaint New England shore towns.

“The easiest way to capture the inspiration of the desert is to wear your basic, khaki Bermuda shorts with a tailored white button-down shirt. Roll up your sleeves, and throw on a rich, brown leather belt and sandals - you’ve created a safari ensemble from last year’s preppy clothes” said Graffunder.

Whatever your style, you’re sure to find some great seasonal pieces this spring that can add just the right amount of fashion flair to what you already own. Remember, it’s not about buying a completely new wardrobe every season, but simply adding a few key items that will renew and refresh your classic basics.

I spent yesterday leisurely enjoying an afternoon at my favorite bookstore, Trans Allegheny Books in Parkersburg. (Okay, that's a personal fantasy as I haven't had a "leisurely day" in years but I can dream, right?) Walking into this book store I feel a sense of calm wrap around me; years of history and shelves of knowledge slowly transport me, even momentarily, into my own personal Zen.

Yesterday was a day of fun and relaxation; a casual time to enjoy my hometown. I'm a people watcher so of course I'm always checking out what people are wearing and what they're doing. I'm amazed by the amount of sweat pants and sweat shirts sported by the majority of the passersby. I understand it's 20 degrees outside but let's unleash our inner Style Diva and slap on some lip gloss and a trendy oversized sweater with a pair of skinny jeans in lieu of gym attire.

It's just about that time of year again, and like clockwork, the holiday invitations will soon arrive and women all over will exclaim in unison, “Holiday Party. Ugh. I have nothing to wear!” It’s no wonder many of us will approach the season with some apprehension. Juggling shopping, travel planning and the social calendar all while coordinating the perfect outfit for each festivity – yikes! And the last thing you want to do now is succumb again to purchasing an impractical outfit you’ll only wear once and then banish to the back of your closet. This season, let’s change our ways! I’ll show you how having a few dressy basics in your closet will keep you always prepared for any festive occasion.

Year after year, the number one most sought after item on the Must Have Holiday Wear List is the “LBD”. Fashion stylists always proclaim the Little Black Dress is the one item you shouldn’t be without. From casual to dressy, it’s simple to change your look by simply switching out the accessories. But if your closet is still missing this key element and your budget doesn’t allow for yet another holiday purchase, then look to a few other items that you might already own.

A second alternative to the stylish but somewhat dressy LBD is a beaded tank top or cardigan set. The right amount of bling can create a festive mood without looking too fussy. Pair with black trousers or a straight skirt, and you’ll have the perfect holiday attire. Although beading, metallic and shimmer have all been en vogue this year, most women will wait until the holidays to try out this look. The trick is to limit the amount of shine. “Subtle, Not Shocking” is my motto.

Next, a menswear-inspired wide leg pant can take on holiday flair by having just the right fabric. A crisp velvet, sleek satin or crepe pant should be purchased in basic black or winter white for the most versatility and wear. They can all be worn back to the basic white button-down or a fun, cropped jacket you already own. Why not try them with a simple turtleneck and a long beaded necklace? It will say sophisticated without having to spend a fortune.

A beautiful shawl is another great investment piece that is often overlooked but can easily add versatility to several of your staple items. It’s also functional, providing more than style on those cool winter nights. Wear it with the Beaded Tank Top or the Little Black Dress to cover your shoulder in a chilly room while also adding flair and drama to your outfit. Look to embroidered styles, velvets and fringed pieces to add texture and richness to your basics.

It’s on every fashionista’s “must-have” shopping list for the season, a wardrobe staple she can’t live without, and you probably already have one hanging in your closet. There’s nothing more fresh than a crisp, white button-down shirt.

Diane Keaton first brought the button-down into the spotlight as Woody Allen’s androgynous “Annie Hall,” but she’s kept the look alive today by pairing it with wide-buckle belts, décolleté-covering scarves and menswear-inspired pantsuits.

“You'd be surprised how many ways a great white shirt can be worn,” said Hilda Batayneh, New York Fashion Designer. She suggests buying a few key items to work with it. “A black belt to be worn at the waist, a neutral-colored, cropped jacket with a trapeze shape, and a vest all can be worn with your classic, white shirt. Be unique and have fun.”

The white button-down shirt is an element no wardrobe should be without. Its reliability and functionality set it apart from all others. Its loyalty is like an old friend, and its comfort is a security blanket, wrapping us in its affection and projecting confidence to the world. It’s the one item that can be worn by all.

Yummy Toffee

Two weeks ago I met Kim Brownlee, the creator of My Mom's Toffee Factory and my life was changed forever!

I confess, I've never liked toffee. I've always found it to be too hard or even slightly bitter.

My mind was changed the minute I bit into Kim Brownlee's recipe. I had the opportunity to taste My Mom's Toffee prior to it's launch on HSN. My taste buds exploded with pleasure and I couldn't stop myself from reaching for "just one more piece."

I raced home to place my order for the toffee and waited anxiously for my package to arrive. Did I share? Nope! I kept it all to myself! A simple treat for working long hours, playing supermom, and being a fabulous wife! I deserved it!

I just got word that Kim Brownlee will be back on HSN tomorrow, Wednesday, April 30th at midnight, noon, 4pm and 9pm. I may have to schedule a meeting and "just happen to be in the area" when her toffee is put out for display.

In 2007, two Connecticut women got together and founded a company called JDDesigns. And from that labor of love, "The "Gratitude Jewelry Collection" was born. The pieces are a reminder to women to live their lives with an attitude of gratitude. The collection also features a special bead made by women in Kenya.

Building a brand designed to plug people into the power of positive thought through the expression of gratitude is the driving force behind Deanna Collins and Judy Yablonski, both Connecticut natives, born with entrepreneurial spirit.

The brand debuted with a limited launch in 2007 when designers Deanna and Judy acted on their vision to have work with purpose. Contestants Collect over $300,000 worth of gently worn prom gowns

Fort Worth, Texas – April 18, 2008 – Over 2300 special occasion dresses were collected during a dress drive hosted by Miss Texas and Miss Teen Texas on behalf of Caitlin’s Closet, a non-profit organization which collects gently worn prom gowns and distributes them to girls who would otherwise not be able to afford to attend their proms. Caitlin’s Closet was founded by Caitlin Brunell, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.

"It's really amazing what 78 individuals can come together and do in only four short weeks!” said Lydia Hall, Director of Miss Teen Texas. “Our local titleholders have given over 2300 young women in seven Texas school districts the opportunity to have a pretty outfit to wear on their special day. I am so very proud to be part of an organization that fosters such endeavors!"

38 Miss Teen Texas local titleholders and 40 Miss Texas local titleholders showed up at the Burleson High School in Burleson, Texas with bags of dresses under their arms on the first Saturday in April. These young women will go on to compete in the Miss Teen Texas and Miss Texas Pageants, July 1st-5th in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Working with Caitlin’s Closet has been so rewarding, it is such a great program,” said Callie Thompson, Miss Teen Texas 2007. “I hope that this program continues to help underprivileged young women around the country.”

Caitlin Brunell, the daughter of NFL player Mark Brunell, founded Caitlin’s Closet in 2006 when she was fourteen years old.

“I wanted to do something to help other teens,” Caitlin said. “I realized that every girl should be able to attend school events and feel good about herself, and I thought I might be able to help make that happen.”

Caitlin has sponsored events in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Florida, Nevada and Texas, and is planning to host more collection drives in California and Kentucky this year. She will distribute those gowns during prom season at events in Oklahoma, California, Florida, Texas and Virginia.

Since its founding, Caitlin’s Closet has collected over 5000 prom gowns and special occasion dresses. Her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Caitlin is the current Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, representing the Commonwealth of Virginia. She won more than $30,000 in college scholarships at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in Orlando, Florida in August 2007. The “little sister” competition to the Miss America Scholarship Organization, this not-for-profit program has provided more than $2 million in college scholarships nationally to young women from 13 to 17 years of age. The title has given Caitlin a nationwide vehicle to promote Caitlin’s Closet.

“Helping others is what the Miss America Organization is all about,” said Molly Hazlett, Miss Texas 2007. “The support of this project shows how dedicated and giving each contestant can be.”

The gowns were distributed to seven area school districts in Texas. Representatives from each district attended the dress drive and left with hundreds of gowns to give to girls in their areas.

· In 2007 AC&C received nearly 40,000 cats and dogs.
· In 2007AC&C found homes for over 7,000 dogs and 14,000 cats
· In 2005, out of twelve City Animal Control Agencies across the country, AC&C of New York Cityranked eleventh in terms of funding. For example, the AC&C receives just over $1.00 per capital amount spent per person compared with San Diego County which spends more than $4.00 per person
· In 2007, AC&C received only $700,000 in private donations, which amounts to less than 5% of donations received by other local “no-kill” shelters which receive donations in the millions of dollars.

Recently, I met the designer and creator of Zivot Jewelry, http://www.livezivot.com/. I was impressed by the variety of styles they offer in their line which is available in boutiques across the country and on their website.

So that leads me to wondering why we buy jewelry in the first place and what types of styles should we consider when making a purchase.

2007 celebrates chunky statement pieces. Necklaces are long, bold and layered. Charms and pendants are an option to make the look even more dramatic. Strands of pearls range from 32" to 60" in length allowing the wearer to wrap and layer herself in luxury.

Earrings are not taking a backstage position this year. They're long, movable, dripping or linear. Hoops are also a classic statement item.

Bracelets should be chunky and layered. Stretch items are also a popular must-haves for the fashion-forward. When layering, don't stop at three; keep going. Four, five, or six bracelets traveling up your wrist finishes off any outfit with style.

I went to a fabulous holiday party over the weekend hosted by Prince Scipione Borghese and his team at Italian Bath and Body. "Holiday Attire" was the dress code of choice and ladies and gentlemen chose to wear everything from sequins to denim.

So how should we interpret the style guidelines written on all of our party invitations?

I say, reach for THE CLASSICS. A little black dress will never fail you in an "after 5" party affair. In fact, in the "year of the dress" the LBD has never been more popular!

If dresses aren't your style, don't shy away from denim; just reach for a pair that's darker and dressier in style. Enter Caitlin Brunell. The daughter of NFL player Mark Brunell, she founded Caitlin’s Closet, a non-profit organization that collects gently used special occasion dresses and distributes them to prom-hopefuls.

While her friends are heading out to the mall to find that one perfect dress, Caitlin is traveling the country in search of hundreds of gowns. She has sponsored events in Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia and is planning to host collection drives in Florida, Nevada, California, and Kentucky this year. She will distribute those gowns during prom season at events in Oklahoma, California, Florida and Virginia.

Since its founding, Caitlin’s Closet has collected more than 200 prom gowns and special occasion dresses. Partnering with Children's Services in Washington, D.C. and Old Dominion High School in Sterling, Virginia, Caitlin was able to give more than 80 girls the chance to attend their proms last spring feeling and looking like the belle of the ball. “It’s amazing to be able to encourage others and make them feel special and beautiful,” says Caitlin.

We had a great show last night on HSN. We debuted the last collection for fall. The highlight of the hour was the Pouf Sleeve Turtleneck!(262-029) What a fabulous top! When I got off the air Kathy Hilton told me how much she loved it and that she was picking it up in black and plum. Wow!

The Crown Shirt was also popular. (258-888) Summer Wyatt, Miss WV, joined the show to model the top and other outfits!

Crazy week!

I coordinated a Pet Food Drive in West Virginia from my home base in Florida. It turned out to be a success. A special thanks to Summer Wyatt Miss West Virginia and Whitney Johnson for greeting folks at the Parkersburg Humane Society. Paul LaPann from the Parkersburg News helped us spread the word and the local TV station- WTAP covered the event. Lorenzo Borghese was kind enough to donate a basket of his pet products, Royal Treatment, and a Lucky dog named Lucky won the prize! Also, Thank you to Jane Engelke and her mother Nancy from www.ElizabethMichaels.net. They helped collect food by serving as a drop-off location!

We were able to collect food, treats, and newspapers for the animals as well as monetary donations.

Don't forget your local Humane Society this year! I know they'd appreciate anything you can give.

New York, New Fashions

I just returned from a great trip to the big apple. We put the finishing touches on the February Collection for HSN.

I also had a chance to catch up with a new friend Linda. Linda and I met on HSN's Bulletin Boards. We've chatted for quite some time about fashion, lifestyles, and the importance of spandex! It was a pleasure to finally meet her in person. We had a great meal at a little South American restaurant somewhere around 44th and 8th Avenue. Good times!

I wore a pretty animal print tunic that's coming up on October 9th at noon and received lots of compliments throughout my day. I should wear animal prints more often!

Miss America's Outstanding Teen Organization hosted a wonderful party for the recent winner Caitlin Brunell in Washington, DC on Friday to celebrate her homecoming as the new national titleholder! MAOTeen is affiliated with the Miss America Pageant and Caitlin will spend her year traveling the country representing the US Dream Academy and her own platform, "Caitlin's Closet." This driven teen has developed an organization which collects prom gowns for girls who can't afford to buy them. Caitlin's grown up in the spotlight as the daughter of Mark Brunell, quarterback for the Washington Redskins. She's a humble, poised, well-spoken, fashionable teen! Fun and Fashionable Week

What an exciting week! It kicked off with my birthday and a meeting with ABC's Bachelor- Lorenzo Borghese. He has a pet care product line on HSN (Royal Treatment) and is passionate about animals. He's teamed up with Summer Wyatt, Miss WV, to fight to animal abuse. I'm pleased to be able to pair up two great friends for a good cause!

I had a wonderful show on HSN this morning at 6am. Lots of great sale priced items and the debut of a fabulous menswear-style shirt (258-112, www.hsn.com) . So many of the Pre-season Fall items just went on sale for less than $20! I couldn't believe it! Buy now, wear now!

The early morning show went so well that HSN asked for an encore on September 27th at 5am. Yes, more great sales in the early hours!

Fashion Blog Begins!

My first blog! Today was a typical day at the office. The highlight of the day was going through a disc of photos from a shoot with Miss West Virginia, Summer Wyatt. Summer modeled a new shirt we've developed in partnership with the Miss America Organization. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Miss America Scholarship Fund. Many people don't know that the Miss America Organization distributes over $45 million in college scholarships to young women across the country.
