Prince Lorenzo Borghese Champions Kill-Shelter Adoptions With Launch of www.NuzzlePlanet.com
Social Networking Site for Animal Lovers is Aimed to Raise Awareness for Kill-Shelters
New York – January, 2008 – Television personality and “Bachelor” Prince Lorenzo Borghese has taken a remarkable stand with his new social networking website for animal lovers and their pets, www.nuzzleplanet.com, with a focus on raising awareness for “kill-shelters” (shelters that have no choice but to euthanize animals for lack of space. These shelters have an “open-door” policy and can not reject any animals) nationwide. The website, which delivers an open exchange of information about pets, their health and well-being, also serves as an on-going pet adoption drive location with a focus on kill shelters to encourage pet lovers to act fast on adopting a pet in need.
“Most people believe that kill-shelters are inhumane,as did I before I learned the facts,” said Lorenzo Borghese . “The truth is kill-shelters receive much less public funding than no-kill shelters, yet kill-shelters provide the majority of pets adopted in the United States , and they are also the ultimate destination for stray pets when other shelters are full, which is almost always the case since no-kill shelters typically max out at well under 50 slots. There’s an incredible misunderstanding that by donating to a no-kill shelter you’re doing the most good. The factis, kill-shelters that have to euthanize due to lack of space need more attention and support. Moreover, due to limited funding, animals in these kill-shelters often end up in cages with no toys, blankets, or beds. If pets aren’t adopted, they may be euthanized within several days. It’s not the kill-shelters we should blame, it’s us.”
Getting right to the heart of the matter, here are the facts derived from one shelter, Animal Care & Control of New York City (“AC&C”)
· AC&C uses 100% of its proceeds to improve the facilities, expand adoption, medical and transport services, walk and socialize cats and dogs.
· In 2007 AC&C received nearly 40,000 cats and dogs.
· In 2007AC&C found homes for over 7,000 dogs and 14,000 cats
· In 2005, out of twelve City Animal Control Agencies across the country, AC&C of New York Cityranked eleventh in terms of funding. For example, the AC&C receives just over $1.00 per capital amount spent per person compared with San Diego County which spends more than $4.00 per person
· In 2007, AC&C received only $700,000 in private donations, which amounts to less than 5% of donations received by other local “no-kill” shelters which receive donations in the millions of dollars.
Nuzzleplanet.com has collaborated Animal Care & Control of New York City to spotlight the thousands of animals desperately in need of adoption at “kill” shelters in New York City and across the country. In highlighting animals from these shelters rather than from other shelters, Nuzzleplanet seeks to save the animals most in need of loving homes – those at risk of euthanization.
